NCP City Centre Car Parks: Your Appeal Guide
NCP (National Car Parks) is the largest car park operator in the UK, managing over 500 car parks in city centres, airports, stations, and hospitals. Their city centre sites are primarily multi-storey barrier car parks with pay-on-exit systems. NCP charges arise from a range of issues including overstays, machine failures, and tariff disputes.
How NCP City Centre Parking Works
Most NCP city centre car parks use a barrier system. You take a ticket on entry, park, and then pay at a machine or via the RingGo app before returning to your car. The exit barrier reads your paid ticket and lifts. When this system works smoothly, it is straightforward. When it fails, the consequences can be expensive.
Machine and Barrier Failures
NCP machines and barriers are not immune to technical issues. Common failures include the exit barrier not reading your ticket, the pay machine being out of order, the RingGo app failing to process your payment, and the barrier not lifting after payment. If you experienced any of these, document the failure immediately. Photograph the machine, screenshot the app error, keep your ticket, and note the time.

Tariff Disputes
NCP tariffs can be complex, with different rates for different durations, evening and weekend pricing, early bird specials, and maximum daily rates. If the tariff board was confusing, if the system charged you more than you expected based on the displayed prices, or if you believe the calculation was wrong, challenge it. Request a breakdown of how the charge was calculated and compare it to the displayed tariff.
NCP Pre-Booked Parking Issues
NCP offers pre-booked parking through their website and app. If you pre-booked but had issues (wrong car park, incorrect dates, system did not recognise your booking), keep your booking confirmation email and any app screenshots. Pre-booking disputes are common and often resolvable through NCP customer services before needing a formal appeal.
NCP Court Risk
NCP does not routinely pursue unpaid parking charges through the County Court. While they are a large and well-resourced company, their approach to debt recovery is generally limited to letters and debt collection agencies. The risk of actual court action is low.
